CHAPTER 23

I pulled into the small parking lot by the Sea Glass. There were two reserved spots. The one Vivi usually parked in was empty. There were lots of people out on the beach waiting for sunset. I slipped in the back door of the Sea Glass.

Joaquín was busy making drinks, Michael, his husband, sat at the bar across from him. Almost every table was full. I grabbed an apron and went to work.

“Thanks, Chloe,” Joaquín said.

When all the drinks were served I sank on a stool next to Michael.

“Joaquín, you should have called me,” I said. “I thought Vivi was going to be here.”

“She looked tired and it was slow, so I sent her home.”

It was a reminder of Vivi’s age. She was so youthful in spirit and energy that I’d forget she wasn’t as young as me.

“Then the sunset viewers started streaming in, so I called Michael to come give me a hand.”

I gave Michael a quick kiss on the cheek. “You’re the best.”

“He is,” Joaquín hummed the Tina Turner song The Best.

I smiled at his Schitt’s Creek reference where one character had sung the song to the other. I’d watched the show over and over because it made me happy if I was feeling blue.

Joaquín leaned over the bar so he was closer. “What did you learn today?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Come on, Chloe, I may only have known you for seven months, but that’s long enough to know if someone you care about is in trouble, you’re going to move heaven, hell, and earth to help them.”

My eyebrows popped up. I blustered for a minute trying to deny it. It’s not how I pictured myself, but he had a point. I narrowed my eyes. “And who is it you think I care about?” I thought I’d been playing it so cool with Rip. Well, maybe up until yesterday anyway. I’d been flirty when other men came in.

Joaquín laughed and Michael joined in. They were starting to annoy me.

“I thought you were going to burst into flames when Rip walked in here yesterday,” Joaquín said.

I turned to Michael. “Do you have anything you want to add?”

He held up his hands. “Not me. I only know that every time Rip’s name comes up you get one of those dreamy looks on your face like starlets did in fifties movies.”

“Now I’m Gidget?” I’d loved watching those movies and the TV show with my grandmother. Gidget liked to be out on the water as much as I did and I’d always admired her dogged determination, along with her taste in men. Ah, Moondoggie.

“If the shortness fits,” Michael said with another laugh. “And you do kind of look like a short-haired Sally Fields when she played Gidget.”

That wasn’t the first time I’d heard that comparison. However, if they could tell I liked Rip, I must be losing my ability to not show my emotions.

“Come on, what’d you find out?” Joaquín asked again. “I’ll make you a happy drink.”

“The happy drink first and then I’ll talk.
